Strada Statale (State Highway)12 Abetone and Brennero (SS 12), is an important Italian arterial route that connects northern Italy to central Europe.
The road originates in Tuscany, precisely in Pisa, and continues to the north, passing through San Giuliano Terme, where it becomes State Highway Abetone and Brennero until it arrives in Lucca. From here, it heads toward the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano Mountains, tracing the course of the Serchio River for a few kilometres.
After having crossed the Apennine Mountains through the Passo dell'Abetone (Abetone Pass), where our hotel is located, in enters the region of Emilia Romagna. It reaches the region of Lombardy near Poggio Rusco (in the Province of Mantova) intersecting State Highway 496 Virgiliana and crosses the region's territory for a few kilometres (about twenty) up to Ostiglia (province of Mantova) where it crosses the Po River and arrives in the region of Veneto.
Here, it touches the Municipalities of Nogara, Isola della Scala and Buttapietra, arriving in Verona. After crossing the city, home of the La Scala family, the road heads up toward the Vallagarina area, touching Rovereto and Val d'Adige passing through Trento and Bolzano.
It then continues into Val d'Isarco, passing through Chiusa, Bressanone and Vipiteno up to the state borders with Austria located at the Passo del Brennero at 1375 metres above sea level. |
