Lucca is a city of priceless historical value, and this aspect clearly brings with it a wealth of monuments and works of art of great importance also on an international level. Famous are the intact walls that encircle the city, dating back to the XV century. 4,450 metres long, already during the second half of the 1800s they were transformed into a pedestrian area for walking and strolling, and they are among the best-preserved walls in all of Europe. The city of Lucca is famous also by the name of the "city of the 100 churches", because its historic centre contains several examples of medieval churches so rich in architectural importance. Thanks to its stupendous historic-cultural heritage, Lucca's historic centre has applied for inclusion among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. |
