The historic Regional Park of Monte Sole was instituted in 1989 and is located in the province of Bologna. It extends along the territory comprised between the Reno and Setta rivers - the location, during WWII, of the horrible Massacre of Monte Sole by Nazi-fascists. The park's territory is contained in the municipalities of Marzabotto, Monzuno, Grizzana Morandi. Hunting is not allowed within the park, except for selection hunting. In the park, there are itineraries for mountain bikes and horse riding (at the Visit Centre there is also a rest stop). Motocross is forbidden. Numerous thematic itineraries are found in the park. Historical: numerous are the remains of the ancient Etruscan past, the city of Misa with its necropolis, and other discoveries in different areas of the park. Naturalistic: history and nature entwine, a careful eye can catch the slow modifications that man, starting with the Etruscans, has performed on the territory (anthropization) and the sudden abandonment, as a natural consequence of the massacre. Nature taking back the spaces that belonged to man. We can observe animals in their natural habitat and enjoy the high degree of biodiversity of this protected area. Artist Giorgio Morandi observes the scenery, seeking the inspiration that he then fixes on canvas. |
